Consortium for the defence of typical wines of Barolo and Barbaresco
The Defence Consortium, the inter-professional organisation that unites leading operators in the whole production sector, from winegrowers to winemakers and commercial operators, has witnessed and discreetly led technical, economic and human progress for almost 60 years. The various operators are usually grouped together in a single structure, represented by the winery which exclusively markets its own products.

The need to form an association to protect producers of Barolo and Barbaresco became apparent as soon as they realised they had an exceptional product on their hands: in 1908 they asked for the creation of a “certificate of origin” released by an association operating under the control of the Provincial Council and the Piedmont Winemaking Syndicate while they waited for specific legislation to be issued. The first law was passed in 1924.

It provided for “typical wines”, with constant characteristics defined by the consortium charter. Work began on preparing a Consortium for the defence of typical Barolo and Barbaresco wines, and a draft of a charter was debated in 1927.

The "Consorzio per la difesa dei vini tipici di Barolo e Barbaresco" (Consortium for the defence of typical wines of Barolo and Barbaresco), was created in 1934 to safeguard the qualitative characteristics of the wines, promote awareness and disseminate both name and quality in the right seats. The production context was also established: the zone of origin, the grapes and the characteristics of the wine.

After stopping its activities during World War II, the Consortium was reconstructed in 1947 and worked to obtain recognition for these wines, firstly as DOC (Denomination of controlled origin), and later as DOCG (Denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin). It was reformed once again following the issue of the new law, n° 164 of 1992, on the denominations of origin of wines.

The current Consortium for the Defence of Barolo and Barbaresco Alba Langhe and Roero was set up in 1994 and is the reference point for winemaking estates in the Langa and Roero area, which have found it to be the best organisation for authoritatively hanling the problems of development and organisation that affect them individually and the sector as a whole.

The Consortium and its member companies have devoted particular attention to these problems over the years: overall quality, the prospects of protecting the landscape and the environment, relationships between the various production categories within the winemaking sector, positive and negative effects of tourism and the more general modernisation of the situation compared with rational territorial development.

It is with this attitude of operating as an instrument to create general awareness in the lively and dynamic context of the Langa and Roero winemaking sector that the Consortium has worked to create and consolidate positive partnerships with the departments that operate in the same territorial context and with the various public authorities.
