| Over the centuries, encouraged by the
passion and determination of an intelligent and strong-willed
man, various grape varieties have successfully put down
roots among these hills, some preferring the Langa district
while others chose the Roero as their home, imparting
very specific characteristics to the landscape.
The
grapes of each variety were usually vinified individually,
so every grape variety produced a particular type of
wine. This happened before history intervened, such
as in the perhaps most famous case of Barolo.
Today the Roero, to the left of the River Tanaro, is
cultivated mainly with traditional varieties such as
Nebbiolo, Barbera, Arneis, Favorita and Brachetto.
To the right of the Tanaro, in the Langhe, we find
vineyards cultivated with Dolcetto, Moscato, Barbera,
Nebbiolo, Freisa, Grignolino, Pelaverga and Favorita
There are also the so-called international grape varieties,
the most important being Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay,
Merlot and Sauvignon.
